John Tuckwell and Chris Hanmore win Datchet Open 2012

The first TT of the season kicked off at Datchet on 17-18th March, the forecast was too tough to call leading up to the event and turned out to be mixed and definately not what was forecast.   Saturday was lighter winds and Sunday just got better and better until it was blowing old boots.

Not withstanding the dodgy forecast 33 catamarans turned out for this event (Hurricanes, Tornados, F18’s and the A Class including the defector Struan Wallace and Datchet was honoured to have Mischa Heemskerk in attendance coaching the F18’s.

7  Hurricanes on our start for what became firecely contested and close racing, John Tuckwell steaming ahead  in first place taking the podium and Greame Staddon and Greg Reed fighting it out until they were seperated only by 1 point for 2nd and 3rd places overall after discards.

In the end it all boiled down to the final wind shift to the line in the last race. Graeme snuck in by less than ½ a boat length to bag 2nd place in the race, and 2nd overall. No shift and the positions would have been reversed. – its never over , until its over!

Very enjoyable close racing , if not a little frustrating with the wind doing crazy things , but that’s the fun of chess on water!

The evenings entertainment consisted of brilliant game of rugby, great curry and beer and banter in the company of some very good friends , what could be better.
